Continuous Sulfuric Acid Dilution System
Sulfuric Acid Dilution Systems from Powell dilute 93% to 98% sulfuric acid to any lower strength. The systems are automatic and include pumps and heat exchangers for the safe, accurate, and continuous dilution of the concentrated acid.
Systems are available in 40, 80, and 150 GPM flow rates.
The sulfuric acid dilution system can be manually started by the operator, or can be automatically activated by the optional control system.
The system mixes the strong acid and water in the sulfuric acid reactor using high turbulence created with a specialized system design. Although the amount of heat generated is large, high recycle rates avoid high exit temperatures. The combination of properly sized recycle rates and the heat exchanger allow heat removal with completed acid dilution temperatures easily below 95°F (35°C) using cooling tower water.

Modularized Design
Additional modules are available that can be added to the basic package as needed. These modules include:
Sulfuric Acid Fumes
Special attention has been given to tank and process vents with the combination Acid Scrubbing – Water Supply module and tank overflow designs. When tanks and process vents are producing acid fumes, this module will scrub the acid fumes using the make up water for the acid dilution.
Process Controls
The system is supplied with an Allen Bradley control system with an operator interface for process control. Allen Bradley Device Net Communication is used to connect the controls of the other optional modules as well as any other optional process system.
A modem is supplied allowing access to the control system processor from remote locations for programming changes and troubleshooting.
Materials of Construction
The basic materials of construction consist of non-metallic tanks and piping, Tefzel® lined magnetic drive pumps, Teflon® lined control valves, and a Hastelloy® C2000 plate and frame heat exchanger. These equipment choices are cost effective and provide safe operation with a minimum of maintenance.
The basic designs for the tanks are high-density cross-linked polyethylene tanks with a linear polyethylene liner made by Poly Processing. As an option, Halar® lined FRP tanks can be offered.
Piping in the basic design is Kynar® schedule 80 pipe and fittings for the strong acid and CPVC schedule 80 for the dilute sulfuric acid. As an option, Teflon® lined steel pipe and fittings can be offered.
Powell can quote the system with any higher level of materials of construction requested.
Budget Price
The base price starts at approximately $200,000 US (+-30%). Additional costs are incurred if optional modules are purchased, different materials of construction are used, or different instrumentation and controls are utilized.
