About Butane

Butane is a member of the family of liquefied petroleum gases (LPG). It is a colorless, flammable gas with a skunk-like odor at standard temperature and pressure. It is a liquid when stored under its own pressure and flashes to a gas immediately upon release to the atmosphere. It is an asphyxiant and can exhibit anesthetic properties at high concentrations. Continued inhalation can lead to nausea and death. Prolonged contact with evaporating liquid can cause localized freezing and frostbite.

Butane is transported in pressurized containers and tank cars using angle plug valves.

Prevent Accidental Release of Butane

Powell's Emergency Gas Shut Off Valve Closure Systems are designed to prevent significant releases of hazardous gases like Butane. In the case of an accidental release, the emergency valve closure system will close the valves in 10 seconds or less, effectively preventing further release from the container.
