How to Apply Pipe Joint Thread Sealant (Pipe Dope)

Lox 8 Pipe Joint Thread Sealant & LubricantWhen piping lines for use with chlorine, be sure to efficiently seal all connections with a non-reactive sealant. Powell recommends using a thread tape that is covered with sealant paste. This creates a secure seal that prevents chlorine leaks without the fear of the connection deteriorating due to the corrosive nature of chlorine. The advantage to the Powell system of sealing threaded connections is that the connection can be undone when necessary without damage to piping system.

Wrap Gold High Density Thread Tape around the end of the pipe.

Begin by wrapping Gold High Density Thread Tape around the end of the pipe. Start the tape two threads back to avoid the tape coming off and getting inside the pipe. Wrap the tape in the direction of the threads. This would be clockwise if looking at the end of the pipe. The tape should be wrapped around the pipe 3 times (as shown in Figure 1).

Apply the Inert Safety Sealant

Once finished with the Gold High Density thread Tape, Inert Safety Sealant should be applied. This can be done using your finger to smear the sealant around the tape. When finished, there should be approximately 1/16” of sealant covering the tape (as shown in Figure 2).

After applying the Inert Safety Sealant, proceed to connect the fittings together.

Once the threads are prepared with Gold High Density Thread Tape and Inert Safety Sealant, proceed to connect fittings together. This type of proper connection will ensure an adequate seal between the fittings that can later be adjusted or undone if necessary (as shown in Figure 3).
